Publisher Changes for Physint: Kojima’s Project Moves from Sony to Xbox
Sony has stepped away from Hideo Kojima’s espionage game Physint, with Xbox taking over as publisher. Bill Skarsgård has also been confirmed in the lead role.

The publisher switch for Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated espionage game Physint has now been confirmed. Sony has stepped away from the project, while Xbox has stepped in as the game’s new publisher. In the same process, it was also confirmed that Bill Skarsgård will take the lead role. As a result, the project has entered a new phase both on the publishing side and in its cast.
According to Kojima, the split did not happen all at once. In a Zoom meeting from Sony in mid-June, the studio learned that the project had lost its support. Kojima made it clear that the decision caught him off guard. It was also reported that studio president Shinji Hirano wondered whether the studio could even stay afloat after this development.
Behind the split with Sony
Kojima explained that the possibility of Physint being cancelled had come up earlier as well. The game was emphasized as an important project for both him and Kojima Productions. For that reason, the team worked intensely for about three months to find a new partner.
What stood out in the process was that the reason for the decision was not clearly explained. Sony described its move away from the project as “difficult,” but did not share why. This added to the uncertainty surrounding Physint. Kojima said they did everything they could to keep the project alive, and that this search eventually led them to a common ground with Xbox.
Physint’s position made this shift even more visible. The game is being described as a project close to the classic espionage style long associated with Kojima’s work. Kojima also openly stated that he sees the game as one of the projects with the highest sales potential in his career.

Why did Xbox step in?
On the Xbox side, this move was not presented as just a publishing deal. According to Kojima, the two sides aligned on a shared vision for the future. That suggests the agreement was more than a short-term rescue attempt. The fact that Xbox is already working with Kojima Productions on OD also stood out as a factor strengthening the relationship.
The approach voiced by Xbox’s side painted a similar picture. It was stated that the new partnership would not be limited to games, and would also extend into film and television. This turns Physint from a standalone project into part of a broader collaboration. For Kojima Productions, it also shows that the support behind the project has been restructured.
Xbox stepping in as publisher also sent an important signal for the game’s future plans. Physint had previously been positioned as a generational project. Kojima had already said that the game was still years away, making it clear that the project was not meant to be rushed. Now, with a new publisher in place, that long journey appears to have been reframed.
In that context, the report Xbox Cloud Gaming adds a time limit: Microsoft is reshaping access and pricing also shows that Xbox is taking a more aggressive approach on the content and services side. The Physint deal looks like part of that strategy.
Bill Skarsgård becomes the new face of Physint
Another major headline is Bill Skarsgård. Kojima Productions confirmed on September 17, 2026, that Skarsgård will take the lead role in Physint. The announcement also included a new poster featuring Skarsgård and Charlee Fraser.
Kojima said that he and Skarsgård had long been fans of each other’s work. He added that costume tests, scans, and camera tests conducted with the actor earlier this year further increased his confidence in the project. This detail shows that Physint is not just an idea on paper; it is also making tangible progress on the visual and cast side.
The studio described Physint as its third original intellectual property. According to Kojima, the game is seen as a culmination of his 40-year career as a video game creator. With Xbox’s support, the game is also said to be aiming for a new technical level and to set a new standard in the action-espionage genre.
The Bill Skarsgård announcement helps offset some of the uncertainty created by the publisher change. While Physint is being secured through a new partnership on one side, it is also becoming more defined on the other. That shows the project is not only surviving, but continuing with a new identity.
