Blizzard’s Message at BlizzCon 2026 Opening Becomes Clear
BlizzCon 2026’s opening ceremony packed in StarCraft’s return as an open-world shooter, Diablo 5, a new Overwatch hero, and more across Blizzard’s major franchises.

BlizzCon 2026’s opening ceremony turned into an announcement chain that brought Blizzard’s biggest brands together on one stage, while slipping in a few surprises along the way. At the center of the event were StarCraft’s return, Diablo 5, a new hero on the Overwatch side, and additional announcements tied to the Diablo universe.
This time Blizzard did not lean on a single game. The plan spread across the stage brought older series back into the spotlight while also taking new steps that connected different universes. The message delivered for StarCraft, in particular, became the most eye-catching headline of the event.
StarCraft Returns in a New Genre
One of the biggest announcements at BlizzCon 2026 was the reveal for StarCraft. The series will return in 2030. But this comeback will not follow the familiar formula. Blizzard is taking the sci-fi brand out of real-time strategy and moving it into the open-world shooter genre.
That decision also changed the tone on stage. The reveal featured a cinematic trailer focused on Dominion soldiers’ training. A few hours later, the same soldiers were referenced through what remained of their combat gear, suggesting that the new game is setting a much darker frame.
What Blizzard said about StarCraft also showed that the company is not putting its old series on the table for nostalgia alone. It is trying to rebuild a well-known brand through a very different genre. That stood out as one of the boldest decisions of the event.

Diablo Expands Across the Board
The Diablo segment was not limited to a single announcement. First came word that an animated series set in the Diablo universe is in development at Netflix. That was followed by a series of content announcements for Diablo 4.
One of the most notable details was Deckard Cain’s return. The character will appear in Diablo 4 with Season of Hell’s Legacy on September 15. That same date is also important for the game’s version. will launch alongside the new season.
