Steam’s New Game Wave Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

Withering Realms stood out from a different angle. Developed by solo creator Moonless Formless, the game launched in Early Access and was said to offer up to 42 hours of gameplay in its current form. Its Soulslike structure, dark atmosphere, and free demo helped generate interest. The game’s Steam rating was listed at 94. Its story follows a world after a mysterious event, where the dead roam, spirits wander, and only a few people remain capable of using magic.

Nighthawks, meanwhile, appeared to be in a more difficult position. The game was reportedly removed from Steam search and disabled for sale in some countries. Valve classified the project as Adults Only. The development team described this as “very bad news for us.” The decision stood out as a harsh intervention that directly affected the game’s visibility on Steam.

The place of indie games on the Steam storefront

Cat Me If You Can became one of the more distinctive indie releases to arrive on Steam. The game is built around the idea of photographing hidden cats to bring lost colors back. It launched on September 8, 2026. A 10% launch discount was applied, bringing the price to $16.19 until September 15. It was also noted that a free demo had been available since April. The game includes more than 725 cats, 9 handcrafted chapters, and more than 50 quests and puzzles.

Ex Sanguis, Shroom and Gloom, and Emissary also represented different edges of Steam’s indie flow. Ex Sanguis was described as a tactical roguelite entering Early Access. Shroom and Gloom arrived on Steam Early Access as a dungeon crawler built around dual deckbuilding on two separate decks. Emissary, meanwhile, was announced as a dark fantasy RPG, standing out with a card-game-inspired enemy telegraph system and a crafting-focused structure. No release date has been announced for the full version.

Different genres landed in the same Steam week

Rushcremental arrived on Steam as a cozy incremental game set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The core loop centers on gathering resources through the fog, upgrading abilities, and building a faster racing car to claim new areas. Buitopia DVD was announced as an unusual interactive fiction project planned for Steam on October 9, 2026. Players will move through menus, make choices, solve puzzles, and uncover mysteries.

The Merlies was announced as a conflict-free metroidvania. It was confirmed to launch on September 29 for PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch. The game has no combat, bosses, or weapons; instead, players guide a community of birds over obstacles. A demo is available on Steam, and it was said to have earned 90% positive feedback from early players.

Dungeon Automata also stood out on Steam with its demo. In the game, players manage a party by programming golem behavior. Sonucido: Dreams of the Gray God was announced as a new dungeon crawler horror RPG due in 2027. Corner Perk added a different flavor to the wave as a warm cafe sim that can be played for free in a browser.

Steam’s new content flow now presents a much bigger picture than individual games alone. Release volume is rising, genre variety is widening, and the battle for visibility is becoming more intense. For indie developers in particular, the challenge is no longer just publishing a game, but standing out in the crowd.
